Spring Tips
The Hampton Roads Water Efficiency Team wants you to be prepared this
spring for all your outdoor watering needs. There are simple things you can do to
promote water conservation as you prepare your gardens and landscape.
TIPS:
-
When watering plants, use a watering can instead of a hose.
-
Check to make sure your lawn needs to be watered before doing it.
-
Water before 9:00 a.m. or between 6:00 p.m. and twilight.
-
Make sure all drainage areas function properly.
-
Make sure water comes in contact with grass or plants only, not sidewalks or driveways.
-
Keep grass blades between 2-3 inches tall. Longer blades help reduce evaporation.
-
Reduce heavy foot traffic on your lawn during wet periods. This will help prevent soil compaction, which adds to drainage problems.
-
Use mulch. For best results, keep 1-3 inches around plants, shrubs, etc. Plants or shrubs with mulch around them require less water.
-
Plan and design your landscape by zoning your garden or yard into areas of high moisture and drought-tolerant use.
-
Use grass sparingly. Replace some grassy areas with mulched beds, groundcovers, or other low water users. Select a turf grass that is adapted to the site and is drought resistant.
-
Clean driveways, walkways, and patios with a broom, not a hose.
-
Aerate soil regularly.
Happy Spring!
